Our Beliefs
We frequently hear from our clients that the most harmful effects of being victimized are the feelings of helplessness and loss of control.
We get justice by obtaining money damages from negligent parties who fail to take reasonable steps to prevent criminal attacks. We understand the realities of the justice system. We also understand how people who are victimized by crime can best be served by the legal system.
We frequently hear from our clients that the most harmful effects of being victimized are the feelings of helplessness and loss of control.
The difficult and often painful reality is that due to factors such as limited resources and personnel, the primary focus of criminal prosecution is to punish criminals, rather than to address the needs of victims. Due to the sheer number of cases being prosecuted, the criminal justice system cannot adequately help a victim recover from physical and emotional trauma. And the criminal justice system is simply not designed to provide monetary compensation for the physical and emotional injuries suffered by crime victims.
Clients often tell us “it’s not about the money as much as it is about making sure this doesn’t happen to someone else.” But the reality often is that money can provide crucially needed resources and support for a life-long struggles that can result from a criminal attack.
Unlike the criminal system, the civil justice system is intentionally designed to provide for the recovery of money damages. An important added benefit to pursuing money damages is to motivate wrongdoers to change their behavior. The idea is to get adequately compensated for your injuries while giving the wrongdoer a good reason to act differently next time.
We firmly believe that just as the criminal system is intended to address effects of crime on society, the civil system is intended to address the effects of crime on the victim.
In addition to aggressively pursuing any criminal perpetrator who has sufficient financial assets, we aggressively file lawsuits against negligent third parties whose actions create conditions that allow criminals to victimize our clients. These third parties may include landlords, apartment complex owners, hotel/motel operators or employers of perpetrators.
In many cases we pursue civil litigation even if the criminal prosecution is unsuccessful or there is no prosecution at all. We also work closely with prosecutors’ offices during our clients’ involvement with the criminal system and we routinely provide referrals to additional victim assistance resources you deserve and need to fully recover from your injuries.
